We Did Not Start With AI

KickAss started the same way every digital marketing agency in India started.

With a website builder, a Google Ads account, and the conviction that businesses deserved better than what most agencies were selling.

That was 2016.

The first clients were real estate developers in Goa trying to reduce dependency on brokers. Hotel owners who had handed their visibility to OTA platforms and were paying for it. Local businesses spending more on ads each year and trusting the results less.

The work was straightforward: build the website, set up the campaigns, get the calls coming in.

For a few years, that was enough.

What Changed — And When We Noticed

The tools kept improving. The results kept getting harder to explain.

Somewhere between 2020 and 2023, a pattern began to repeat across clients.

Rankings held. Traffic came in.
Ad spend stayed flat or increased.
But enquiries were not growing as the numbers suggested.

The gap was not the campaigns.
It was not the websites.
It was further up the funnel — in the part of the customer journey before a search is even typed.

Customers were arriving at decisions differently.
They were asking AI assistants which hotel to book.
They were using ChatGPT to shortlist developers before visiting a single website.
They were getting recommendations from systems that did not operate like search engines—systems that synthesised, summarised, and effectively pre-determined.

The businesses appearing in those answers had not paid to be there.
They had not ranked their way there.
They were there because AI could identify them clearly, trust its findings, and include them without hesitation.

Most of KickAss’s clients were not in those answers. Not because they were bad businesses. Because nobody had built their presence for that layer.

That recognition changed the work.

Before KickAss

Before KickAss, I worked across enterprise technology — SAP and Salesforce — in sales and marketing roles inside complex business environments.

That background does not sound like a natural path to a digital marketing agency in Goa.

But it taught the thing that matters most in this work: how decisions are actually made inside organisations — not how they are supposed to be made, but how they are made — and what that means for the people trying to influence those decisions from the outside.

I graduated from the Asian Institute of Management. Moved into enterprise technology sales. Then, around 2014, started building web properties, running SEO experiments, and doing digital marketing work that was more interesting than anything I had done before.

KickAss was formalised in 2016.
Not because I had a grand plan.
Because the work was real and the clients kept coming.

Why This Work

What I study now — how AI systems discover, evaluate, and recommend businesses — is not a detour from marketing. It is the logical end of the question I have been asking since 2014.

How does a business become the one that gets found?

For ten years, the answer was: SEO, ads, content, consistency.
Those answers are still correct.
They are no longer complete.

The part that is now incomplete is the part AI handles. AI does not return search results. It forms a view — of who a business is, what it does, whether it can be trusted — and then acts on that view before a user clicks anything.

Building businesses that AI forms the right view of is not a new skill category. It is the same pattern recognition applied to a new layer.

That is the work.

AI will mediate a growing share of how businesses are discovered, evaluated, and chosen. That is not a prediction. It is already happening. The question is whether your business is structurally prepared for it or not.

Visibility without clarity is fragile. Being found by many people who do not convert is not a marketing success. Clear positioning — for humans and for AI systems — produces compounding returns. Unclear positioning costs money indefinitely.

Trust compounds across systems. Every consistent signal — your website, your listings, your content, your schema — is a deposit in an account AI draws from when deciding whether to recommend you. The deposits are slow. The withdrawals can be fast.

Websites are decision systems, not brochures. Every page either moves a visitor toward a decision or away from one. Most websites are built as brochures. The ones that work are built as decision systems.

What We Will Not Do

As important
as what we will.

We will not add “AI” to a service name and call it a new service.
The label means nothing without the architecture behind it.

We will not use advertising to fix broken positioning. Ads amplify what is already there. If what is already there is unclear, ads make the uncertainty more expensive.

We will not tell you that more tools will produce better outcomes. More tools produce more complexity. Better outcomes come from clearer thinking applied consistently over time.

We will not pitch you a package before we understand where the actual gap is. The AI Visibility Assessment exists because the starting point matters more than the service list.

It starts with three observations from real buyer behaviour.

A buyer in Mumbai needs a specialist. They do not open Google. They open ChatGPT and ask a question. Thirty seconds later, they have three names. They pick up the phone and call the first one.

A procurement head in Bangalore is shortlisting consultants. She asks an AI assistant for recommendations. It gives her four firms with brief descriptions. She forwards the list to her director. The shortlist is set.

A couple planning a trip to Goa asks an AI which boutique hotels match what they are looking for. Three properties come back. They booked one that evening.
